General Information

The department was started under the leadership of Dr. C. Udayashankar in 2010. The out patient services were the first to be started in 2010 with an average attendance of 20 – 30 patients per day and within the span of one year the attendance is the best for any medical college in the Union Territory of Puducherry. The patients are given out-patient and in-patient services.

Patient Care:
The Dermatology Department aims to provide a comprehensive health care service for the accurate diagnosis and effective treatment of dermatological conditions.
Medical education:
  1. To train medical students to correctly diagnose and treat common dermatological diseases.    
  2. To develop future leaders in dermatology. 
  1.  Know the principles of clinical epidemiology, study design, and research methodology.
  2.  Identify important research questions, develop research protocols, and build analytic skills.
  3.  Identify an area of interest and engage in research projects. 
Departmental Highlights
  1. Slit skin smear and ZN staining for the diagnosis of leprosy.
  2. KOH mount for the diagnosis of fungal infections.
  3. Tzanck smear and Leishman/Giemsa staining for herpes viral infections and vesiculobullous disorders.
  4. Gram’s staining for bacterial infections (especially gonorrhea).
  5. Skin biopsies for histopathology.
  6. Patch testing.
  1. Dermato-surgical procedures:electrocautery, radiofrequency ablation, skin biopsies, nail surgeries, punch grafting, suction blister grafting and split thickness grafting for vitiligo.
  2. Others: intralesional corticosteroid injections for keloids and alopecia areata.
  3. chemical cautery,
  4. Aesthetic procedures:microdermabrasion, microneedling of the skin (dermaroller), Glycolic acid peeling and TCA peeling.
