Psychiatry

Introduction

The Department of Psychiatry is one of the broad specialty departments in this tertiary care hospital. Since its inception, the number of patients coming as well as referred to this department is on steady rise, reflecting quality of care provided by the faculty and staff of this department. The department has excellent infrastructural facilities to provide state of art treatment for all psychological problems and is the preferred referral centre for difficult-to-treat cases. Undergraduate teaching and training has been done as per norms of Medical Council of India (MCI). Department is well equipped with necessary books and journals for reference for students as well as for faculty and staff. Training and teaching of nursing students posted in this medical college hospital is also being undertaken. Guidance for psychology students from other institutions by this department faculty has been well appreciated Pondicherry University.

 

Aims and objectives

 

A. Medical Education

At the end of the course, the undergraduate student shall be able to diagnose common as well as emergency psychological problems. The student shall be able to give counseling for minor psychiatric issues and refer patients in need of specialist care. The skills like establishing rapport with patient, holistic approach and humane care special to this branch will help the student to become a complete doctor in future. The concept of consultation-liaison psychiatry learnt here will be useful at all the three levels of care -primary, secondary and tertiary; and in almost all kinds of specialization one will be.

B. Patient care

The Psychiatry Department aims to provide comprehensive health care service by accurate diagnosis and effective treatment of psychiatric conditions. Community level activities to identify the psycho-social problems and to join hands with rehabilitation network for improving quality of life. Group activities for people need special care done.

C. Research

- Know the principles of clinical epidemiology, study design, and research methodology.
- Identify important research questions, develop research protocols, and build analytic skills.
- Identify an area of interest and engage in research projects.

Departmental services

Out - Patient Department (OPD):

The entire process of patient registration, referral for opinion, investigation and admission is fully computerized. The Out-Patient Department located in the Ground floor (Number 12) of the Hospital Block, functions on all working days of the hospital and caters to an average of 60 patients per day. People from the surrounding locale and also from the far villages in the neighboring Tamilnadu come here. Follow-up percentage is better than national average for Government sector, reflecting quality of care.

Special Clinics:

De-addiction clinic is functioning on every Wednesday with good follow-up in a big hall accommodating patients and their family members. Child-guidance clinic is on the way of operation. All special clinics function at OPD itself.

In-Patient Services (IP):

The Department of Psychiatry caters inpatients through 30 exclusive beds in the General ward—15 for Male patients and 15 for Female patients. The department also has its share in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for management of uncooperative and agitated patients. Railing cot with restrain equipments, round the clock laboratory services apart from excellent nursing care are available in ward. Demonstration rooms for students present both OP and in ward.

Consultation-liaison service (CLS):

Holistic care of patients is achieved by following inter-departmental consultation protocols. In case of Internal Medicine, conditions like delirium, deliberate self-harm, psychosomatic disorders, and alcohol-related problems are dealt apart from psychiatric co-morbidities associated with medical disorders. With department of Pediatrics, developmental delay, learning disorders, dissociative disorders are being taken care of. Smoking cessation service provided in co-ordination with department of Pulmonary medicine.

 

Community mental health service:

Field level programs are being conducted with the department of Community Medicine. Approaches have been made to coordinate with Governmental and non-Governmental organizations for rehabilitation services. Destitute people, old age homes, chronic mentally ill patients are being identified and services rendered. Children in need of special education and vocational training are also taken care of with respective schools.

Psychological testing and counseling:

Rating scales for most of the common psychiatric disorders are available in the department. Counseling for not only psychiatric problems but also for academic performance, job-related stress, and social skills are being given in the department to ensure better quality of life.

Electro-Convulsive Therapy (ECT) :

Pulse ECT machine is available with dual rods making unilateral ECT possible. ECT is given for patients with persistent suicidal behavior, severe depression, resistant OCD, and catatonia. State-of the art operation theatre with all the drugs necessary for ECT is available.
