Otis Redding III Died at the Age of 59, Cause of Death Explained

Otis Redding III, the namesake son of iconic soul musician Otis Redding and member of The Reddings musical group, has passed away aged 59. His unexpected death on April 19, 2023, at 11:38 a.m. from a medical emergency left fans all over the world mourning and paying tribute to this powerhouse artist; known for singing with raw power and emotion inherited from his father. For nearly four decades, he pursued an illustrious career in music that mirrored impressive success achieved by his soulful progenitor.

Who was Otis Redding III

Redding’s musical legacy is one of both tragedy and triumph. The loss of his father at a young age could have easily derailed his musical ambitions, but instead, Redding and his brother formed their own funk band, The Reddings.

While they never quite achieved the commercial success of their father, they made an impact in the music industry with hits like “Remote Control” and “Call The Law”. Even after the band’s dissolution, Redding continued to play and perform, eventually landing a gig as a guitarist for soul singer Eddie Floyd.

Under Floyd’s guidance, Redding honed his talents and found comfort in performing the legendary songs of his father, proving that even in the face of tragedy, music can still be a source of healing and growth.

Historic Macon Foundation Shared their condolences:-

Here at Historic Macon, we are mourning the loss of our friend, Otis Redding III.

When we asked him to serve on our board and our Development and Engagement Committee, he readily agreed. But he wasn’t one to simply lend his name to a good cause, then forget about it.

He donned a green apron and helped out at our Flea Market (and he shopped too!). He attended our membership drives and annual meetings, spreading the word about our preservation mission. And when we needed to go BIG for our 2022 Patrons Party after the pandemic, he and his band delivered. In short, he was always eager to help. That’s the kind of man he was.

Most folks knew him as music royalty — a famous singer and musician. To us, he was also a gracious and community-minded friend. For that we are grateful.

We send our condolences to all of the Redding family and our colleagues at the organizations he championed.

Macon’s Otis Redding III, son of the iconic King of Soul, dies at 59 of cancer.

O3 as many of us called him was a friend, a good person with a big heart. A fantastic musician. Gone much too soon.

I will miss his phone calls as a board member of Meals On Wheels asking for guidance and help. He cared deeply. Especially about the Otis Redding Foundation which we were both members of. My heart goes out to all of the Reddings his brother Dexter, sister Karla and of course his mom Zelma.

In the next life show them how to rock O3! Photos from the Apollo theater as we were celebrating the 75th anniversary of (Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay. Dexter in the middle 03 on the right.
